OFFICE HOURS - TEAM COMMUNICATION
Good Afternoon. A group of mentees asked me over the weekend about different personalities in the office, specifically know-it-alls. I wanted to tell them that the person is a narcissist and to ignore them at all cost. But the truth is some know-it-alls may be searching for admiration or a sense of superiority, but not all know-it-alls are narcissists. Some might come across as know-it-alls due to their confidence, enthusiasm for sharing knowledge, or a genuine desire to help.
Dealing with a know-it-all can be both frustrating and baffling, especially when their behavior disrupts getting the work done. This can be particularly challenging in professional environments, where maintaining positive working relationships is crucial.
Handling know-it-all behavior productively requires conscious effort, as it often triggers automatic, defensive responses. Don’t get upset with them. Their momma didn’t teach them manners. People who feel the need to suck up all the air in the room need guidance. Here are some strategies to help you navigate these situations without escalating conflict:
Redirect Instead of Reacting: Instead of letting your frustration take over, use it as a cue to pause and refocus. Take a deep breath and remind yourself: This is about them, not me. This mental shift helps you stay grounded and prevents you from getting pulled into their mindset.
Example: Suppose you have a colleague who always insists they have the best approach to every project. When they begin to dominate the discussion, calmly acknowledge their point, then steer the conversation back to a collaborative discussion. For instance, say, "That's an interesting perspective. How do you think we can integrate that with our current plan?" Or how can we integrate my idea with your idea? This makes them have to acknowledge what you said instead of only hearing what they suggested.Affirm Yourself: Arguing with a know-it-all rarely helps and can often backfire. Instead, focus on validating your own thoughts and ideas. Recognize that their behavior reflects their issues, not your worth.
Example: When your co-worker undermines your suggestions, resist the urge to defend yourself aggressively. Instead, quietly affirm your expertise and contributions. You might think, "I have valuable insights and experience that contribute to this team, regardless of their opinion."
Remember, mistakes are part of learning and growth. By maintaining a growth mindset and not letting know-it-all comments undermine your confidence, you can handle such behavior effectively. With practice, you’ll be able to keep interactions professional and productive, whether dealing with challenging residents or difficult colleagues.

Enjoy the Pool This Summer

Summer is in full swing, and while it's important to stay on top of work, it's equally crucial to carve out time for relaxation. One of the best ways to unwind is by taking advantage of the pool at your apartment complex. If you don't have one, or prefer a change of scenery, reach out to a co-worker at another location and enjoy their amenities.
Spending time by the pool offers a perfect escape from daily stress. Whether you're swimming laps, lounging with a book, or simply soaking up the sun, it's a great way to recharge. Remember, relaxation isn't a luxury; it's a necessity for maintaining your well-being.
So, make the most of your summer. Take a break, head to the pool, and let yourself enjoy the simple pleasure of a sunny day by the water. And don't forget to wear your sunscreen—you deserve it!
